Understanding the Ban on Russian Oil Imports In Terms of War

Recently, President Biden announced a ban on Russian oil imports in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This is not too surprising since the West have already heavily sanctioned Russia. But, rather than just accept the news, let’s analyse this move from a militaristic point of view.

Military and Economic Warfare

This is probably the most obvious reason. The West wants to drag Russia into a Two-Front War further. Russia is already fighting an on the ground military war against Ukraine, but the US and other Western nations (mainly the UK) have decided to increase the stakes of the economic war against Russia with an oil ban. Therefore, unless Russia has unlimited resources, the lack of revenue from oil exports will eventually lead Russia unable to continue the war in Ukraine. That’s the hope anyway.

Consequently for the US, this will push up oil prices. But, the US is not fighting a two front war, (or, perhaps not yet?), so in this battle, for the US, there is less of a resource drain. However, consumers probably aren’t impressed by increased gasoline prices. Furthermore, according to the Wall Street Journal, 51% of the US’s oil comes from Canada and 7.9%…
